The Hepton Singers’ St Cecilia concert will be a celebration of the music of William Byrd and Benjamin Britten. Although they lived five centuries apart, the distinctive and unique voice of both composers has added immeasurably to the richness of English choral music. To honour St Cecilia as well as the centenary of Britten’s birth the choir will sing Britten’s dramatic and wonderful “Hymn to St Cecilia”. The other substantial work in the concert will be William Byrd’s “Mass for Four Voices”. This is a beautiful Latin setting of the Mass written during Elizabeth I’s reign – potentially a revolutionary act, and a very dangerous thing to do. The concert will also include Britten’s “Chorale after an old French carol”, and several Byrd motets, including his sublime “Ave verum corpus”.
Tea and cakes on sale during the interval
This concert is to raise funds for Water for Kids, a small charity which provides safe water, sanitation and health education for children and communities in developing countries. The charity works in Zambia and funds other organisations working in Tanzania, Kenya, Sierre Leone and Rwanda.
