Heptonstall, Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire HX7 7NS
The centrepiece of the Hepton Singers 2016 summer concerts is A Farewell to Arms by Richard Rodney Bennett. This piece is accompanied by solo cello, played by Heather Broadbent. It sets two poems, written in the 16th and 17th centuries, by George Peele and Ralph Knevet. One speaks of the transformation of weapons and armour into everyday domestic objects in times of peace; the other of an aged knight’s enduring love for his sovereign, even when he no longer has the strength to fight. The combination of choir and cello creates a emotionally-charged, atmospheric piece of great power.
This concert is about the many forms that love can take. In addition to the love of an old soldier for his monarch, we shall sing of love for the soldier, of divine love for us and our love of the divine; of love for children, and the joy in a small community at the birth of a child after many barren years; of a nun’s desire for, and love of, solitude, as well as desire between lovers. We shall include music by Benjamin Britten, William Byrd, Thomas Tallis, Howard Skempton, Peter Maxwell Davies, and local composer Katie Chatburn. Come and enjoy a veritable feast of love!
