This winter’s Hepton Singers concert is a celebration of northern soundscapes set alongside some of the most sonorous music to have come from the Lutheran and Church Slavonic choral traditions.

The centrepiece of the programme is the world premiere of a work composed especially for Hepton Singers by the young Glasgow-based composer Fergus Hall.  His new piece, Meanderings and Confluence, came into being through the Hepton Singers’ participation in a scheme run by Making Music to pair young composers with music groups that are keen to promote new music.  Making Music supports and champions leisure-time music across the UK, providing practical services, artistic opportunities and collective voice for over 3,700 member groups.  For several years, they have run their Adopt a Music Creator* project that brings together music groups and music creators to collaborate on a brand new piece of music for premiere.  Over the last couple of years, Fergus Hall has got to know Hepton Singers and the Upper Calder Valley, and written a piece especially for us.  Meanderings and Confluence weaves together words that describe landscape features deeply connected with both Fergus Hall’s native Scotland, and Yorkshire.  The result is a beautiful reflective sonic tapestry that celebrates nature and the human activity of being in nature.

Hepton Singers will also be performing movements from Rachmaninov’s sublime All Night Vigil, as well as A Wondrous Birth by the Soviet-era composer Georgy Sviridov.  In addition, the programme will include works by J.S. Bach, the Icelandic composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir, the Norwegian-born Ola Gjeilo and the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt.

*Adopt a Music Creator is run by Making Music in partnership with Sound and Music, and is funded by the PRS Foundation and the Philip & Dorothy Green Music Trust.
